The coastline of Le Marche is the perfect location for a family beach holiday. The region boasts 180 kilometres of coastline, 26 locations overlooking the Adriatic Sea, the Seaport of Ancona and 9 marinas. Le Marche has 18 award-winning Blue Flag beaches distributed throughout the coastal territory of all five provinces. The Blue Flag ( ) is an international certification awarded to beaches and marinas that meet specific criteria for water quality, environmental management, safety, and services. Overall, the sea is clean and clear, and the Mediterranean tends to be warmer and less rough than many other oceans. Most of the beaches have lifeguards and the water is shallow close to the shore.
However, the coast is not only ideal for children, but there are also many exciting water sports available for more intrepid adults. There are both public and private beaches, but even the private beaches are relatively inexpensive. And, of course, seaside towns offer an enticing range of restaurants and bars to the hungry visitor. Below you will find a list of the main beach resorts for each of the five provinces.
Water Temperatures
The water temperature in the Adriatic Sea varies throughout the year, influenced by seasonal changes. During the winter months, from December to February, temperatures are relatively cooler, ranging from around 12 to 15 degrees Celsius (54 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit). Spring, from March to May, sees a gradual increase in temperature, reaching approximately 16 to 19 degrees Celsius (61 to 66 degrees Fahrenheit).
Summer, spanning from June to August, brings the warmest water temperatures, ranging between 22 to 26 degrees Celsius (72 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit). This period is ideal for swimming and water activities, as the Adriatic Sea offers pleasant and inviting temperatures.
As autumn sets in, from September to November, the water begins to gradually cool down again, ranging from 19 to 15 degrees Celsius (66 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit). San Benedetto del Tronto is also one of the most important fishing ports on Italy's Adriatic coast, and there is a wonderful fish market. The “brodetto alla Sambenedettese”, a tasty fish stew, is the most popular local dish and is made with several different types of fish. To the north of the large port area there are also many stretches of free public beach. San Benedetto del Tronto's promenade, known as the "Lungomare," is a bustling area lined with shops, restaurants, bars, and gelaterias.
