CALEIDOS - Eight Dimensions. One Region. A New Future.
Understanding the vitality of Le Marche’s communities. The future of Le Marche depends not only on its great cities and internationally recognised destinations, but also on the vitality of its smaller towns and villages.
CALEIDOS – Territorial Vitality Index is an innovative initiative designed to provide a broader and more structured understanding of what makes a community vibrant, sustainable and capable of looking towards the future. Rather than focusing on a single measure, CALEIDOS considers eight interconnected dimensions of territorial vitality.
The Eight Dimensions
1. Community
People, relationships, participation and social cohesion.
2. Environment
Landscape, natural resources, sustainability and quality of the environment.
3. Places
The built environment, public spaces, infrastructure and the character of each community.
4. Experiences
Culture, traditions, activities and the experiences available to residents and visitors.
5. Innovation
New ideas, technology, entrepreneurship and the capacity to adapt to change.
6. Diversity
Cultural, social and demographic diversity and the richness it brings to communities.
7. Opportunities
Employment, education, investment, services and opportunities for future generations.
8. History
Heritage, identity, memory and the connection between a community’s past and its future.
From Measurement to Action
The purpose of CALEIDOS is not simply to measure communities. Its wider ambition is to provide a practical framework for understanding their strengths, identifying challenges and encouraging sustainable strategies for the future. By looking at different dimensions together, it becomes possible to see a more complete picture of territorial vitality. Starting in Macerata CALEIDOS was launched in the Province of Macerata in September 2026. The initial focus provides an opportunity to develop and test the methodology within a real territorial context, working with academic, institutional and community partners. The longer-term ambition is to explore how the approach might be applied across the wider Marche region.
Friends of Le Marche and CALEIDOS
Friends of Le Marche, Italy is a supporting partner of CALEIDOS. Our role is to contribute our international network, knowledge of the region and community of people with an interest in living, investing, working and participating in the future of Le Marche. We see CALEIDOS as closely connected to our wider mission: helping to keep the smaller communities of Le Marche vibrant, sustainable and connected to the wider world. Our contribution is therefore not only to promote Le Marche, but also to help build bridges between its communities and an international audience that cares about their future.
A Framework for the Future Le Marche is a region of extraordinary diversity.
Its future cannot be defined by tourism alone. The vitality of its inland communities depends on many interconnected factors - from people and places to culture, opportunity, innovation and the natural environment. CALEIDOS offers a way of looking at all of these elements together.
